Bright gilt to page edges all round. Frontispieces face each other, very ornate gilt and colored scenes ladies and nature. Frontispieces lithographed by J. Ramage of Edinburgh. Two b/w etchings. Jefferson's Ten Practical Rules of Life pasted to front pastedown. Other charming time pieces of a similar nature pasted to rear pastedown. 237pp. Ads. Poetry and prose. Contents are as follows: Mary Rice, Sleeping Infant Watched by a Dog, The Friends of Man, Thoughts Among the Trees, Orramell: The Forest Maiden, Niagara, "What Then?" First American woman to make a successful career of literature. Lydia H. Sigourney was born in Connecticut in 1791. She opened two schools for young women there, offering a curriculum of advanced studies. She published over 50 titles.
